VW Australia secures more units of T-Roc R
Following its local launch last September, Volkswagen Australia have responded to high local demand for the T-Roc R performance SUV by securing additional production for Australia, including a new variant. This comes on the back of VW’s local arm securing an extra 1,000 examples of the Touareg large SUV last year to meet local demand.

In total, more than 1,800 units of the T-Roc R will now be coming to Australia, made up of 1,500+ examples of the standard model and 300 units of the T-Roc R ‘Grid Edition’ that will be an Australian exclusive. The extra allocation is expected to slash local wait times for the popular small SUV from six months to a few weeks.

“We can accept supply shortages of popular models, or we can try to effect solutions,” said Director of Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Michal Szaniecki. “Ours is a primary R market, so in addition to securing extra T-Roc R production, we’ll offer a unique to Australia T-Roc R Grid Edition.
“Our customers are making the T-Roc one of Volkswagen’s defining vehicles of the 2020s and the T-Roc R is comfortably our top-selling ‘R’ model.”

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine, the T-Roc R produces 221kW at 6600rpm and 400Nm at 2000-5300rpm, driving all four wheels – VW’s 4MOTION system – through a seven-speed DSG and hitting 100km/h from standstill in 4.9 seconds.

The same drivetrain with the same outputs is used in the T-Roc R Grid Edition, with the only difference from the T-Roc R being less standard equipment. The Grid Edition misses out on things like matrix LED headlights, premium LED tail lights, a power tailgate and Nappa leather seat trim. Some safety tech under the IQ.DRIVE system is also absent, like side assist, rear cross-traffic alert and the proactive occupant protection system.

While it comes with less equipment than the $60,300 T-Roc R, the Grid Edition also costs less than the standard version, listing at $54,300 RRP. The only factory option at this price is a $2,000 panoramic sunroof.
Options for the T-Roc R include the same panoramic sunroof, as well as a 'Black Style' trim package, Lapiz Blue interior trim and a Beats sound system.
