Subaru announces Special Edition Forester
Subaru are set to add a new entry-level model to their Forester SUV family, with the ‘2.5X’ to be priced the same as the existing 2.5i and offering the same mechanical features, but differing slightly in infotainment equipment.
In what appears to be a workaround for the semiconductor chip shortage that’s impacting carmakers worldwide, the Forester 2.5X loses the model’s standard 8.0-inch centre console infotainment unit, replacing it with a smaller 7.0-inch unit provided by Alpine.
While the aftermarket Alpine system brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity that’s been unavailable on the Forester, the trade off (apart from the smaller screen) is the loss of the integrated Bluetooth phone display, over-the-air software updates, Voice Command Recognition and the CD player.
Adding the Alpine unit also means the USB-A ports in the console drop from two to one, while the screen’s smaller size sees a generic storage tray added above.
All other Forester audio and infotainment features remain, like AM/FM DAB+ radio, Siri compatibility and an AUX port, plus hands-free communication and audio streaming via Bluetooth. The Forester’s six-speakers for audio output are also unchanged.
All other features on the upcoming 2.5X are identical to the Forester 2.5i, meaning the same naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Boxer four-cylinder engine producing 136kW and 239Nm, matched to a CVT gearbox and all-wheel drive. Active and passive safety equipment is also unchanged from the Forester 2.5i.
Subaru’s introduction of a model with an aftermarket infotainment system follows similar moves by Mitsubishi and Suzuki of late; designed to keep new stock coming into dealerships until the semiconductor shortage can be resolved.
As the upcoming Forester 2.5X arguably loses as much as it gains, pricing has been set at $37,890 (+ ORCs), which is identical to the 2023 Forester 2.5i. Currently listing for $35,990 plus ORCs, the $1,900 price rise applied to the 2.5i for the coming year will also apply to some other 2023 Forester variants, like the 2.5i-L and Hybrid L, while other grades will increase by as much as $2,150 for 2023.
The Forester 2.5X is due to arrive in Subaru dealerships before Christmas.
