Ricardo the fuel efficient military off roader
The program aims to increase the efficiency of the US Army's vehicle fleet by improving military vehicle technology, reducing fuel consumption on the battlefield and reducing the nation's dependence on oil.
The Ricardo light tactical wheeled vehicle maximises fuel economy while maintaining its capability and performance. The vehicle employs a specially calibrated Cummins 14 engine, Goodyear low rolling resistance tyres, a high efficiency 28-volt permanent magnet integrated starter generator that enables electrical accessories and 20kW of power for on board use.
An Alcoa Defense lightweight aluminium structure, armouring, and underbody blast shield supports and protects the vehicle while reducing weight. An improved driveline utilises a unique carrier and differential assembly from Ricardo and AxleTech International, that includes non-geared hubs and superfinished gears to reduce friction, and a six-speed automatic transmission.
The vehicle is currently undergoing testing at the US Army's Proving Grounds in Maryland.
