Mitsubishi announces Triton Sport Edition
Ahead of the arrival of the 2023 Triton later this year, Mitsubishi Australia has announced that selected grades in the range will receive updates and the return of some previously discontinued standard features. There will also be an all-new ‘Sport Edition’ added to the local lineup.
Based on the GLS Deluxe grade, the Triton Sport Edition features specific styling touches and identifying striping outside, as well as premium leather interior trim.
Some existing model grades will receive updates for 2023, including returning audio systems, cosmetic updates and interior trim options.
“We are very proud of Triton’s market performance throughout 2022,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO, Shaun Westcott.
“As part of continually evolving our product offer, we now welcome the new, limited-production Triton Sport Edition to Australia.
“This vehicle is perfectly placed to appeal to those who value a uniquely sporting style, combined with the capability, functionality and practicality that Triton is renowned for.”
Triton Sport Edition
Available exclusively in dual cab ute form, the upcoming Triton Sport Edition is based on the GLS Deluxe grade and comes with what Mitsubishi call an array of unique aesthetic updates that set it apart from the crowd.
Available in white or black paint, the Triton Sport Edition features “dark theme” styling touches throughout, like selected use of black exterior trims that contrast with the chrome dynamic shield badging on the front end.
Regardless of the paint option selected, all Triton Sport Editions come with a red front skid plate and red accents on the side steps and rear bumper.
Over and above this is a dual stripe treatment on the bonnet and tailgate, consisting of thin red and thick matte black decals. Again, these are standard, regardless of whether white or black paint is selected.
Inside, the Sport Edition gains seats upholstered in black leather with contrasting red stitching to match the exterior detailing.
Drivetrain is unaltered from the GLS Deluxe dual cab, meaning all Triton Sport Editions will come with the same MIVEC 2.4-litre turbocharged and intercooled diesel four-cylinder engine producing 133kW and 430Nm, with listed fuel economy of 8.6lt/100km (combined cycle).
Being based on the GLS Deluxe grade, a six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered, with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4x4 system with rear diff lock standard.
Australian availability of the Triton Sport Edition is limited to just 400 units, presumably with a 50:50 split of white and black.
List pricing of $56,440 places the Sport Edition near the top of the MY23 Triton range, between the GLS Deluxe and GSR grades.
GLX, GLX-R and GLS updates
Beyond the Sport Edition, some of the existing Triton grades will receive updates for 2023, starting with the GLX, which now comes with black side steps as standard, but loses the previously available 2.4-litre petrol engine option for the single cab chassis body.
On the GLX-R and GLS, the SDA1 audio system that was removed due to component supply shortages will be reintroduced on MY23 models, incorporating all the previously available features, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, dual USB ports, an HDMI port and 7.0-inch touchscreen.
GLS Deluxe and GSR ‘Tan Orange’ interior packs
While the GLS Deluxe is available as a standalone grade, the GLS dual cab ute can be upgraded to similar spec with the GLS Deluxe package
For 2023, this package consists of leather-accented seat upholstery, leather accented door trims, power driver’s seat adjustment, heated front seats and a 360-view Multi Around Monitor.
For the GSR grade, the optional Tan Orange interior pack is also available on the dual cab ute body and includes black leather appointed seats with tan orange leather inserts, door trims in black leather with contrasting orange stitching, a similar treatment for the steering wheel, gear shifter and park brake, as well as a tan orange finish on the centre console box and knee pad.
2023 Lineup
With the removal of the 2.4 petrol engine, the Triton lineup for 2023 will be powered exclusively by the MIVEC 2.4 turbodiesel, which produces 133kW and 430Nm maximums across the range.
Manual transmissions remain available across most MY23 Triton variants, including the GLX single cab chassis 4x2 and 4x4, GLX club cab chassis, GLX double cab chassis, GLX+ double cab ute and GLS double cab ute.
Depending on vehicle weight, body style and transmission choice, economy ranges from 7.8lt/100km to 8.6lt/100km on the combined cycle.
Safety features fitted as standard across the MY23 Triton range under the MiTEC banner include Active Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Trailer Stability Assist, Active Traction Control, Emergency Brakeforce Distribution, Emergency Stop Signal and a Brake Override System.
Additional safety and driver assistance features added to upper Triton grades include Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Hill Descent Control and an Ultrasonic misacceleration Mitigation System.
Pricing for the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton starts at $30,740 in 4x2 form and $37,490 for 4x4s, with the cheapest 4x4 dual cab ute being the GLX at $44,690. Topping the 2023 range is the GSR dual cab ute with the Tan Orange interior and Roll-Top Tonneau Pack at $64,640 (All prices exclude ORCs).
All MY23 Tritons will be covered under Mitsubishi’s ‘10/10 Diamond Advantage’ programme that consists of a market-leading 10-year/200,000-kilometre warranty and 10-year capped price servicing, with up to four years’ roadside assist available.
Australian delivery of the MY23 Triton range is expected from December. For more details and to pre-order your example of the limited-edition Triton Sport Edition, see your Mitsubishi dealer.
