Lamborghini donates Urus SUV to Italian State Police
Continuing their tradition of providing vehicles to Italy’s Polizia di Stato (State Police) that started two decades ago, Automobili Lamborghini has donated a specially equipped version of their Urus Performante AWD SUV.
Handed over at an official ceremony outside the Ministry of the Interior headquarters in Rome last December, the Urus is now in service on Italian highways.
The sixth vehicle that Lamborghini has provided to the Italian State Police, the Urus Performante will be used for general duties as part of the Highway Police fleet, as well as high-speed transportation of urgent medical supplies, like human organs and plasma.
“Knowing that our cars are used for public duties and, above all, for crucial operations to save human lives, can only make me and the whole company proud,” said Stephen Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO or Automobili Lamborghini, at the handover ceremony. “These initiatives, which bring us great satisfaction, demonstrate our innate close ties with Italy.”
Already a high-performance vehicle, no drivetrain upgrades were needed on the Urus Performante for its role with the State Police. Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the Super SUV produces 490kW and 850Nm, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. With this package, 0-100km/h acceleration is achieved in 3.3 seconds and top speed is 306km/h, although the police-specific additions may fractionally blunt performance.
Compared to the regular Urus, the Urus Performante is lighter, offers 12kW more power and has a reprogrammed auto transmission that shifts quicker.
For police use, the Urus Performante gains an LED light bar and siren on the roof, a weapons locker in the cabin and flip-down display screen ahead of the front passenger seat for messages. This screen is also used to monitor a special portable fridge in the boot designed to transport human organs and plasma in medical emergencies. An additional custom-made compartment in the boot holds a defibrillator and other police service equipment.
The distinctive blue and white livery on this special Urus Performante was designed by Lamborghini Centro Stile to State Police specification and includes the ‘tricolore’ Italian flag on the front guard vents, as well as reflective State Police logos on the doors. Inside, Italian flag accents have been added to the seat belts.
The Urus Performante joins a specially-prepared Huracan LP610-4 in the Italian State Police fleet that was donated in 2014. Prior to that, Gallardo coupes were provided by Lamborghini in 2004 and 2008.
