Hybrid to be added to next-gen Toyota Kluger
A hybrid powertrain isn’t a Kluger first, having been released in the US last year, but it will be a first for the Australian market. The fourth-generation version of the seven-seat SUV will be offered with both a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid system as well as a non-hybrid 3.5-litre petrol V6.
The 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is combined with two electric motors, one front and one rear, for a combined total output in the 179kW range, according to Toyota.
At this stage, the 3.5 V6 appears to be the same as the 218kW/350Nm unit in the current Kluger, as does the eight-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota have confirmed FWD and AWD versions of the new Kluger will be offered, including an “intelligent AWD” system for the hybrid, but whether all-wheel drive will be range wide is unknown
The fourth-generation Kluger sits on the Toyota New Global Architecture ‘GA-K’ platform, providing what’s said to be multiple benefits for dynamics, safety and styling. The new platform enabled engineers to develop a lightweight and highly rigid bodyshell with a low centre of gravity, equating to what they say is nimble handling and comfortable driving, both around town and on the highway. The new body is longer, too, for increased passenger and cargo space.
Finally, the new Kluger will be equipped with advanced Toyota Safety Sense active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions.
"The all-new hybrid Kluger is the result of combining Toyota's hybrid leadership with extensive experience in SUVs, along with an unrivalled reputation for quality, durability and reliability," said Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley.
Australian release of the new Toyota Kluger is expected in the first half of 2021.
