First GMC Hummer EV Pickup built
Following its initial reveal back in October, 2020, the first GMC Hummer EV Pickup rolled off the assembly line at GM’s ‘Factory Zero’ in Detroit-Hamtramck just before Christmas, 2021
Bearing VIN #001 and in ‘Edition 1’ form that offers maximum power, torque and range, the first production 2022 Hummer EV Pickup had actually been auctioned nine months before it was built. On 27 March, 2021, VIN #001 went across the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction, selling for U$2.5 million (AU$3.1 million approx.). Proceeds were donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organisation established to honour the memory of September 11 terrorist attacks first responder Stephen Siller.
Unlike other variants of the Hummer EV using GM’s electric Ultium Platform, the Edition 1 produces an estimated 1,000hp and 11,500lb/ft (746kW and 15,590Nm) from its three electric motors, along with an estimated range of 329 miles (529km) from its 200kWh battery.
Finished in Interstellar White paint, EV Pickup #001 was fitted with the Lunar Horizon interior colour scheme that’s standard on the Edition 1 and optional on other Hummer grades. Combining black, white, grey and bronze, the Lunar Horizon trim gets its name from the topographical map of the Sea of Tranquility (the site of the first moon landing) that features on the speaker grilles.
Among features that maximise off-road performance, the Hummer EV Pickup offers four-wheel steering through the ‘CrabWalk’ function that allows the rear wheels and front wheels to steer at the same angle at low speeds and move the vehicle diagonally. There’s also Adaptive Air Suspension with ‘Extract Mode’ that lifts suspension height approximately 6 inches (149 mm) to clear obstacles on tough tracks or improve the Hummer EV’s water fording depth.
Other features include ‘Watts to Freedom’ that delivers 0-60mph (0-97km/h) acceleration in approximately 3 seconds and the semi-autonomous ‘Super Cruise’ function that allows hands-free driving and automatic lane changing on approximately 322,000km of enabled roads in North America.
“We brought this truck to market with speed and agility and brought GM another step closer to an all-electric future,” said GM President Mark Reuss as the first Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 rolled off the assembly line. “With our Ultium Platform as the foundation for a broad range of applications, the GMC Hummer EV offers our customers the ultimate in capability and performance.”
All Edition 1 versions of the Hummer EV Pickup sold out within minutes of the order books opening back in October, 2020, but orders for the standard model remain open. At time of writing, GM has no plans to offer the Hummer EV Pickup in Australia.
