Despite being one of the newer players in Australia, LDV has made an impression. Their T60 has carved out a decent slice of our all-important dual cab ute market and accounts for roughly half of LDV’s total sales here. The Chinese brand with British origins arrived in Australia in 2017, starting with commercial vehicles (vans and utes) before adding SUVs and people movers.
In terms of the T60, what had started with a basic dual cab 4x4 ute in a choice of ‘Pro’ or ‘Luxe’ trim, a single engine choice and manual or auto transmission options expanded to include a single cab chassis and 4x2 option in 2018, followed by the ‘Trailrider’ special edition dual cab in 2019.
In 2020, a notable addition to the local range arrived in the form of the ‘Mega Tub’ option for the T60 Luxe dual cab. A longer wheelbase than the regular T60 (3470mm vs 3155mm) allowed the length of the tub to be 275mm longer (1800mm vs 1525mm) without compromising cabin space, while overall vehicle length increased from 5365mm to 5680mm. In more practical terms, this meant a standard stepladder could be carried in the tub or two dirt bikes transported without being angled or needing the tailgate to be dropped. The Mega Tub’s inner width of 1510mm (1131mm between the wheelarches) and height of 530mm was unchanged from tub in the standard wheelbase T60 Luxe.
A tub liner came as standard (impacting the aforementioned dimensions fractionally), with hard and roll-top tonneaus available as options.
Offering greater load length than the VW Amarok XL and Ssangyong Musso XLV that were also available at the time, the T60 Luxe Mega Tub’s available space was only bettered by full-sized pickups from RAM and Chevrolet. The only compromise, if you could call it that, was the longer load area on the T60 Luxe Mega Tub didn’t come with an increase in payload capacity, which remained the same as the regular T60 Luxe auto at 890kg.
Longer load area and a few cosmetic details aside, the Mega Tub spec was much the same as the T60 Luxe with the standard wheelbase, starting with a 2.8-litre intercooled turbo diesel four-cylinder engine producing relatively low maximums of 110kW at 3400rpm and 360Nm at 2800rpm. The engine could be matched to either a six-speed manual or, as in the vehicle featured, a six-speed sports automatic transmission. With this combination, combined fuel economy is listed at 9.6lt/100km and tank capacity is 75 litres.
Independent front and leaf spring rear suspension was (and still is) standard dual cab ute stuff, but the T60 Luxe Mega Tub benefitted from local suspension tuning which had been conducted by Walkinshaw Automotive. Originally exclusive to the Trailrider model, the improved tune had been applied across the entire T60 range by 2020, including the Luxe Mega Tub.
In terms of off-road capability, dual-range four-wheel drive is standard on the T60 Luxe Mega Tub, with ground clearance of 215mm and wading depth of 550mm. Approach and departure angles of 27 and 24.2 are reasonable for this type of vehicle, but the longer wheelbase obviously means it’s easier to ground out and get hung up. An aftermarket nudge bar and light bar have been fitted, but how much – if any – off-roading this T60 has done is unknown.
The feature vehicle has the Mega Tub’s distinctive 17-inch alloys (with a full-size spare), which off-roaders would be advised to swap for sturdier steel wheels and compatible tyres, while the standard sports bar is ready to mount auxiliary lighting and the roof rails ready to tie down more camping gear.
The factory tow bar suggests this vehicle has done some load lugging, but buyers should be aware that the T60’s braked towing capacity is 3000kg, which is 500kg lower than most rivals.
In terms of other features, the Luxe spec meant more and/or better standard equipment than the T60 Pro, like a rear diff lock, power folding mirrors, a 360-degree camera, proximity key, push-button starting, climate control air con, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and partial leather seat trim, along with powered and heated front seats.
This was on top of spec shared with the Pro that included a 10.0-inch centre touchscreen (one of the largest in its class), Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker sound system, auto and height-adjusting LED headlights, power windows, rain-sensing wipers, a 12V socket and more.
A comprehensive safety suite meant the T60 achieved the maximum 5-star ANCAP rating from launch and this continued with the 2020 models. Standard safety tech fitted to this vehicle includes ABS, ESC, EBA, Traction Control, Rollover Stability Control, a Hill Holder, Hill Descent Control, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Fatigue Warning, Blind Spot Sensor, rear parking sensors, six airbags (including first- and second-row head airbags) and the aforementioned 360-degree camera.
Described as a one-owner vehicle, listed mileage on this 2020 T60 Luxe Mega Tub is just 23,055km. As with all used vehicles, inspection is recommended and the assurance of an extended warranty offered by Oakridge Automotive is a smart investment, especially given the LDV factory 5-year warranty on this MY20 example may be close to expiring, if it hasn’t already.
