2002 Nissan Patrol DX wagon
- 3.0lt turbo diesel four-cylinder
- 5-speed manual
- Dual range four-wheel drive
- 5 seats
- Loaded with extras
Often going head-to-head with Toyota’s LandCruiser for the title of Australia’s off-road king, Nissan’s Patrol was equal – some would argue better – to its main rival in most areas. It was certainly superior to other contenders in this space at the time, like the Mitsubishi Pajero, Holden Jackaroo and Land Rover Discovery, in terms of off-road performance, features or price.
Continuing a lineage that started back in the 1960s, the ‘Y61’ GU-Series Patrol wagon was introduced in 1997 and proved to be so popular in Australia that it remained on sale alongside its ‘Y62’ successor for three years after the latter was introduced in 2013.
In terms of Patrol wagons from 2002, a DX like the vehicle featured was the entry-level model. Above that, the ST, ST Plus and Ti offered progressively more standard features and better trim the further you moved up the scale, but were pricier, too. Those upper grades also offered a 4.8-litre six-cylinder petrol engine and automatic transmission, but a 2002 DX could only be had with a five-speed manual, matched to either a 4.2-litre or 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
Listed outputs from the 3.0 t/d when new were 116kW at 3600rpm and 354Nm at 2000rpm. Specific fuel economy figures are hard to find, but around 12lt/100km seems to be the base for highway driving, rising to around 15lt/100km for city diving and higher again for off-road work. Regardless, the 3.0 t/d was less thirsty than the larger 4.2 t/d four and certainly less so than the 4.8 petrol six. Those larger engines came with larger fuel tanks, but the 95-litre tank in the 3.0 t/d still delivered decent range.
The Patrol DX’s standard five-speed manual transmission connects to a permanent four-wheel drive system with low range and manual locking hubs. Combined with live axles and coil spring suspension front and rear, this drivetrain made a formidable package off-road.
As with any used car, a pre-purchase inspection and/or warranty protection is recommended, but this applies particularly to older Patrols, as many have been driven hard off road. It applies even more so for units with the 3.0 t/d and five-speed, as this drivetrain has been cited for problems, particularly when servicing has been inconsistent or neglected.
On the 2002 Patrol DX, both ABS and air conditioning were extra-cost options, reflecting both its entry-level status and the period when it was built. Standard equipment did include a limited slip diff, power (adjustable, not folding) mirrors, a driver’s airbag, central locking and rear window washer/wiper.
The vehicle featured comes loaded with extras - a bullbar, winch, spotlights, snorkel, aftermarket wheels and tyres, roof rack fitted with front and rear auxiliary lights, a side awning and a UHF antenna.
Inside, there’s a dash cam, JVC infotainment system with Kicker subwoofer in the rear, auxiliary electrics (presumably to run a fridge, compressor, etc.), a Titan drawer storage system behind the rear seats and a few other modern add-ons. Contact Nick’s Motors for the full list of extras fitted to this vehicle.
Infotainment and camp-ready upgrades aside, the interior of this Patrol is mostly stock, with some additional switchgear (for the auxiliary lighting) and extra speakers visible. These, along with aftermarket pedals, floor mats and grab handles, are the only obvious additions.
Vinyl flooring and cloth seats were standard for a 2002 Patrol DX wagon. The driver’s seat area has the usual wear, but the front passenger seat and rear seats both present well.
Standard measures for a Patrol like this include a 2970mm wheelbase, 4930mm x 1840mm x 1875mm (LxWxH) dimensions, a 1595mm front and 1615mm rear track, 2357kg kerb weight, 643kg payload and braked towing capacity of 3200kg. Despite the extras fitted to this vehicle, towing capacity and payload are likely to be close to factory spec.
