2007 4x4 Sales
However, results by segment show the strength and weaknesses of the market, with surging growth in compact SUVs, whilst the surprise growth segment was the light 4x4 truck market, with the star performer being the 4x4 pickup/cab chassis segment.
Total SUV sales for the year finished at a staggering 198,176 vehicles - up by 27,239 vehicles (16%) over the previous year. Of these, compact 4x4s accounted for 90,330 vehicles - an improvement of 14,655 over 2006 figures. The medium SUV?segment, driven largely by the Ford Territory, Toyota Prado and Kluger and Holden Captiva recorded 74,434 vehicle sales, up 21.3% over 2006 figures. The luxury SUV market also grew, but only by 9.3%, or an improvement of 1,700
vehicles on the volume achieved in 2006.
The one segment that did take a body blow was large 4x4s, which recorded just 13,370 vehicle sales for 2007, down 2,099 over 2006 (-13.6%). The majority of these being the Nissan Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser.
It is easy to see the strength of the compact 4x4 market, with a host of well equipped and updated models. While Toyota came out on top, other top performing models came from Hyundai with the Tucson, Honda with the CR-V, Mazda and Mitsubishi.
The large 4x4 market saw the final rights read over the Ford Explorer, while the Jeep Commander was comprehensively eclipsed by traditional market leaders, the Nissan Patrol and the all conquering Toyota LandCruiser.
A key growth area was in the light truck market at 177,556 vehicles, some 15,765 up on 2006. The pick-up market was
bolstered by new product during the year, but the biggest grinner was the pick-up/cab chassis 4x4 segment, which was up 15,052 (an impressive 22.3%) over the previous year.
2007 saw some familiar brand names discontinued, with perhaps the biggest being the demise of the Ford F-Series. Both the F-250 and F-350 never reached their market potential here, while the Explorer and Courier Pick-up were also discontinued as Ford invests in the Ranger as their their flagship commercial of the future.
Holden's Adventra was replaced by the far more successful, but not nearly as innovative Captiva, while the Hyundai Terracan and Mitsubishi Challenger were also discontinued.
