Infiniti is Nissan's luxury brand – think Lexus and Toyota – and the FX is its flagship model. It's a sporty SUV with the petrol V8 petrol engine.

Mechanically it is sound, has punchy performance, standout looks, plenty of gear and it’s presence on the road will turn heads.

You'll get plenty of looks because it's new and looks unlike anything else on the road.

The Cabin
It's a mix of high-quality leather and Infiniti buttons and dials.

There are plenty of features. You get surround-view cameras, Bi-xenon headlights, a memory function for the seat, steering wheel and mirrors, a 10-way electrically adjustable seat, keyless entry and ignition and sunroof.

The infotainment system alone includes an eight-inch touchscreen, 30GB hard-drive sat-nav, 10GD music hard-drive, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, iPod connectivity and a Bose 11-speaker sound system.

The Ride
It's surprisingly keen on them for a big SUV. The steering is direct and it disguises the size of the FX. Running on 9.5-inch tyres it certainly has plenty of grip in the bends. It is also helped by Infiniti's unique "rear active steer" system that helps get it to turn sharply.

Those tyres are sitting on 21-inch wheels so you do tend to feel the lumps in the road. But that's the trade-off for a sharper feel through the bends. This is a sporty SUV and if you want a cloud-like ride pick something else.

It feels quick which is what you expect from a V8. Or to put it another way, it's fast without being overwhelming.

The big 90-litre tank stretches the distance the Infiniti can travel.

Personally I like the looks, but I appreciate they aren't for everyone. There's plenty of equipment for the money too.

This top-of-the-range S Premium gets a full suite of acronyms. FCW (forward collision warning), IBA (intelligent brake assist), ICC (intelligent cruise control), LDP (lane departure prevention), LDW (lane departure warning) and LSW (low speed following).
