THE STORY Introduced in 1999 as the E53 model, the BMW X5 was the first SUV produced by BMW. At launch it featured all-wheel drive and came with either manual or automatic transmission options. It was originally marketed as a ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’ (SAV) rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. Shifting away from traditional ‘body-on-frame’ construction, the X5 utilized a ‘monocoque’ chassis instead – a structural system in which loads are supported by the objects ‘structural skin’ rather than a frame. In 2006 BMW launched the second generation of the X5 - the E70 model.
